Description:
University Center is a redesigned and renovated 1950’s vintage shopping center on the edge of the Valdosta State University campus. The original complex - a grocery store occupied by Woolworth, Sears Roebuck, and several smaller stores set in a vast unattractive parking lot - was redesigned to blend with the Spanish Mission theme of the campus.
Ellis, Ricket designed facilities for student union activities, administrative spaces and classrooms. The building also contains large and small lecture rooms, a small theater, a complete commercial kitchen with dining facilities, and future retail spaces.
There are also offices for the Registrar, Financial Aid, Business and Finance, Personnel and Purchasing. A second level was inserted into the existing structure which required new steel floor and roof framing for a group of offices enclosing an additional 4,500 sq ft including an elevator and two stairs. All mechanical, plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems were replaced.
